When the Revolutionary War began only about 20-30% of the Colonials thought it was necessary. When the Civil Rights Movement began it was hugely unpopular and was criticized for the breadth of the injustice it illuminated. When the gay rights movement began with a series of bar riots in LA and NY it was transfolk and street kids who picked up rock, bricks, and stood against oppression.
Under it all though was a current of progressive change that weathered all the naysayers and moved us forward as a people."
